OSTEOPATHIC TREATMENT OF LOW BACK PAIN
AND SCIATICA CAUSED BY DISC PROLAPSE

A. T. Still was the creator of Osteopathy and since then, this discipline is a manual method of care, based on the knowledge of biomechanics and the interrelationships between several tissues of the organism; it has made steady progresses since then, thanks to the contribution of the research and to the practice of ten million osteopaths throughout the world.

Beyond a simple group of manual techniques, Osteopathy allows an analysis of the patient that lies within the scope of an original etiopathological concept, based on fine and precise physiological and pathological knowledge.

This work, devoted to the lumbar spine and the conservative osteopathic treatment of the lumbar intervertebral disc prolapse, is oriented to anatomy, biomechanics, neurophysiology and differential diagnosis. It represents the result of 25 years of treating disc prolapse. Very richly illustrated —nearly 800 drawings, photographs and diagrams— and rigorously documented, the work provides the expert the standards guiding on the research of the lesions and dysfunctions and it describes a large number of osteopathic techniques: HVT, soft tissue techniques, muscle energy, functional techniques, Jones´ strain-counterstrain techniques, spray and stretch and myofascial release techniques.

Essential for the student who wishes to evolve quickly to an effective practice with the confirmed osteopath, the work is also oriented to physicians of physical therapy, practitioners, surgeons of the spinal column and to orthopedic surgeons, like rheumatologists.

Dr. François Ricard is osteopath, D.O. - Ph.D., and he teaches Osteopathy. He is the author of several works in French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian. Many of these works have been object of translations. Rewarded with the Osteopathic Medicine Authors´ Prize in 1986, he is currently the Principal of Madrid School of Osteopathy and gives postgraduate lectures on Osteopathy in Europe and South America.
